Rourkela selected as second Smart City in Odisha

The steel city Rourkela is set to become Odisha's second smart city. It figures among the list of 27 smart cities released yesterday in New Delhi by Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu. Rourkela, which had missed the bus in the first round when the list of 20 smart cities with Bhubaneswar at the top was declared on January 28.

Welcoming the announcement and greeting residents of the steel town, chief minister Naveen Patnaik promised all help from the state government to turn Rourkela into an ideal smart city. The announcement by the Centre sparked off celebrations in Rourkela with local MLA Dilip Ray hailing it as a timely move that would open the doors for multiple development activities in the city.


Typhoon Malakas slams Japan

A powerful typhoon slammed into Japan today, leaving at least 3 dozen people injured and one missing, as torrential rains caused serious flooding that washed away a bridge and inundated homes and cars.

Transportation across southern Kyushu - hit by deadly quakes earlier this year - and parts of western Japan came to a standstill as Typhoon Malakas ripped across the country, packing winds of up to 180 kilometres per hour. Officials issued evacuation advisories that affected about 620,000 people.

Regional train services slammed to a halt and about 180 flights were cancelled because of strong winds from the raging storm, which was moving toward Tokyo this afternoon with officials warning of high seas, possible landslides and more flooding.


Guangdong Province issues warnings for super typhoon Meranti in China

In South China, Guangdong Province issued warnings for super typhoon Meranti, which is expected to make landfall in the east of Guangdong in three days. Typhoon Meranti strengthened into a super typhoon in the Pacific Ocean on yesterday.

It will move at 20 to 25 kilometers per hour and approach Taiwan's southeast around September 14th and likely make landfall near the coast of Guangdong and Fujian provinces. According to Guangdong meteorological authorities, the typhoon will bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to Guangdong from September 14th to 16th.




Mexico on alert as Hurricane Newton heads for Pacific coast

In Mexico, a huge storm bearing down on the Pacific coast has strengthened to a hurricane just hours before it is due to make landfall. Hurricane Newton is heading north-west towards the southern end of the Baja California peninsula with winds of about 120 kilometre per hour.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Newton could trigger flash floods. It warned that preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

The same weather system lashed areas of the south-western state of Guerrero over the weekend before strengthening to a tropical storm. Torrential rain that began last Saturday caused more than 30 mudslides across the state, forcing main roads to close.

In the resort of Acapulco, floods and landslides affected dozens of homes and schools and about 200 people had to be rescued from a housing complex.


Majuli in Assam to become India's first island district on 8th September

Majuli in Assam is all set to become the first island district of the country. Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal said, the river island will be upgraded to a district from sub-division on 8th September. He said, in a move to take governance to the people, a Cabinet meeting will be held at Majuli on the 7th.

Majuli covers an area of around 340 miles and is one of the prime tourist destinations of North East. Nearly 1 lakh 60,000 people reside in the island. The first cabinet meeting of Srabanand Sonowal government decided to upgrade Majuli as a district.
